Throwing the BS Flag Ground Rules

  • You can throw the Bullshit Flag when there is an instance of injustice or untruth (to any degree) and you have facts to prove it.
  • You can throw the Flag when someone or something can do something better than they already do it. Again, you need facts and substance to "prove" it.
  • No Flag shall be thrown until you thoroughly understand the objects "story," or point of view. (Thats a tough one, but do it!)
  • You can't throw the Bullshit Flag on someone who's dead. They're not around to defend themselves.
  • You can't throw the BS Flag like a blanket on someone, like Jesus, the Dali Lama or George Bush. This is too vague and global. Only throw the Flag on something Jesus said or did, or allegedly did if you think he didn't.
  • You can't throw the Flag like a blanket on some entity or event either. The NRA, "I hate that organization", one might say. We'll go on hating, but if you're going to throw the Flag, make it specific.
  • Always be prepared to explain why you're calling bullshit. Then intelligence is the key. You don't like Howard Stern. Why? Because he's a buffoon. That's a start. Something more substantive, however, is preferred.
  • You can throw the Flag repeatedly at someone or something, especially when that something or person persists in their bullshit ways.
  • You never throw the Flag to hurt someone else. You only throw it to empower yourself and make the world a better place.
  • For any issue or problem, you throw the Flag at the entity that is ultimately responsible. So if you don't like the tax charge at the New York restaurant, throw the flag at the Governor, not the proprietor.
  • If, on the other hand, you're dealing with a mealy-mouthed, weak-ass middle manager who always cries "That's what the big boss wants," throw the Flag right at him and say, "Well if the boss gets what he wants we'll all go out of business, and here's why, so you should do it this way..."
  • The BS Flag is not a front for free-form emotionalism, or unsubstantiated ranting and raving.

What if someone throws the BS Flag at me?

If you get hit with a BS Flag, you may be understandably sad, confused, upset or in denial about having just been flagged (thinking, of course, that your sh*t doesnt stink). Please be assured, it does at least some of the time. So does everyone else's. Thats why were selling these things! But we digress, if you are flagged, we recommend that you take a deep breath and try to follow these suggestions:
  • Accept the flag graciously. After all, someone has taken the time to point out one of your imperfections in the hope that someday you could become a better friend/co-worker/ boss/significant other/decent human being.
  • Kindly return the BS Flag to the person who flagged you (ideally without kicking it or spiking it off the persons head).
  • Counter-flagging is acceptable as long as you have a valid complaint. Remember, the point is communication, not one-upsmanship. Unless youre in politics.
  • If you don't already have one, get your own BS Flag (or cousin potty-mouth) so you can return the favor.
